JOINT NMO–IMA PRESS RELEASE
Nagpur Doctors Call for Action Against Extortion; Announce Five-Zone Hospital Safety Coordination Committee
Nagpur | 8 October 2026
A hospital cannot function safely when violence and extortion disrupt patient care.
Doctors’ commitment to patient care must not be mistaken for weakness or acceptance of intimidation. Healthcare professionals must be supported when they report threats and seek lawful protection. Threats and disruption at hospitals can affect treatment and undermine the trust between doctors and patients.
The security watchlist covers persons against whom an FIR has been registered alleging violence against hospitals or extortion from hospital owners. This is a security measure; emergency medical treatment will remain available.
At the same time, every genuine patient grievance deserves a fair hearing. NMO and IMA support impartial examination of complaints, clear communication with families and responsible reporting. Allegations of medical negligence and allegations of extortion must each be examined on their own evidence.
According to Dr. B.K. Murali’s account, the extortion demand was ₹15 lakh, with threats concerning cancellation of the hospital’s licence, demolition and implication in false cases. Published reports state that Panchpaoli Police registered a case against seven people. The associations acknowledge this reported police action and urge a thorough investigation. The allegations remain subject to investigation and due process.
NMO and IMA express solidarity with Dr. B.K. Murali of Hope Hospital, and with Hope Hospital and Ayushman Hospital, Nagpur, over concerns raised regarding intimidation and extortion. The associations call for prompt, impartial investigation and effective protection for patients, doctors, nurses and hospital staff.
Five-zone Rapid Action Coordination Committee
NMO and IMA announce a Rapid Action Coordination Committee covering five zones of Nagpur to facilitate communication among healthcare institutions, association representatives and the police, and to escalate hospital-safety concerns.
The associations welcome Nagpur Police’s reported Quick Response Hospital Security Grid, covering all 34 police-station jurisdictions through dedicated emergency WhatsApp groups connecting police officers, hospital directors and nodal officers. The NMO–IMA committee is intended to complement this police initiative.
The hospital-safety meeting at Police Bhavan on 30 September, chaired by Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil, brought police leadership and medical representatives together. Reported participants included Dr. Sachin Ghatte, President, IMA Nagpur, and Dr. Manjusha Giri, Maharashtra State IMA President. Today’s appeal is to translate these discussions into dependable action.
NMO and IMA thank Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil for his proactive and enterprising leadership in addressing hospital-safety concerns and bringing police and healthcare representatives together. The associations welcome his initiative to strengthen coordination and timely response for safe, uninterrupted patient care.
NMO and IMA call for:
- Designated police contacts and clear escalation routes for urgent threats at hospitals across Nagpur.
- Prompt acknowledgement, appropriate action and follow-up on complaints of intimidation, violence and extortion.
- Protection of emergency departments, ICUs and treatment areas from threatening gatherings and disruption.
- Accurate medico-legal documentation, timely police intimation where required, and preservation of reporting records and acknowledgements.
- Accessible patient grievance procedures and clear communication with patients and relatives.
- Responsible media reporting that distinguishes allegations, verified facts, investigation findings and court decisions.
Public participation and grievances
NMO and IMA invite patients, families, doctors, hospital staff and concerned citizens to join the Safe Hospitals initiative at safe-hospitals.com.
Any grievance can be conveyed to IMA or NMO through this portal, or by contacting:
- Dr. Dhiraj Gupta, Secretary, NMO: +91 79720 37051
- Dr. Sachin Ghatte, President, IMA Nagpur: +91 98224 62288

Our shared priority is patient welfare: safe hospitals, fair inquiry and timely action against unlawful intimidation.
