What the source explains
The researchers analysed newspaper accounts to describe characteristics of reported attacks. This can reveal themes worth investigating, including the settings in which incidents attract coverage. Newspaper-based research is limited by what is reported, how stories are selected and the details journalists can establish. It cannot by itself measure the true incidence of all assaults or prove that a change in coverage reflects a change in violence.
Using this reading in your hospital
Keep a local media reading list separate from a verified incident register. If several stories concern the same event, link them together rather than counting each as a new assault. Label allegations, official statements and established findings distinctly.
