Separate information from access
Families need an explanation of what happens next even when entry to a clinical area is restricted. Publish an appropriate contact point and a realistic update arrangement approved by the clinical team. Avoid a system where every staff member gives a different answer or families repeatedly approach a busy bedside for basic information.
Prepare the conversation
Choose a location permitting private discussion and access to assistance. Identify who can arrange interpretation or accessibility support. Clinical staff should explain uncertainty rather than offer guarantees. Address the patient’s care and the family’s questions. Escalate threatening behaviour through the institution’s safety procedure while preserving the appropriate route for clinical communication.
Hand over outstanding updates
If an update was missed, record how the next contact was arranged. Do not treat understandable questions as aggression. Describe any threatening behaviour factually. Ensure the next shift knows which family is waiting for an agreed discussion and who will provide it. A reliable update process supports trust without promising that conflict can always be prevented.
